A short C XO Y interaction, where C X is a carbon-bonded chlorine, bromine, or iodine and O Y is a carbonyl, hydroxyl, charged carboxylate, or phosphate group, is known as a halogen bond in biomolecules. The XO distance must be less than or equal to the sum of the respective van der Waals radii.

Explain about the halogen bond?

Halogens are the group 17 elements. They have 7 electrons in their valence shell. They only need one electron to completely fill their valence shell, hence they can only form one covalent bond.

Halogens combine with other atoms to produce compounds by attracting their electrons. For instance, in the salt NaCl, the electron from the Na+ atom is drawn toward the halogen Cl- because it is extremely electronegative and only requires one electron to create a stable octet. An illustration of an ionic bond is this.

The most significant salts in terms of industry are NaCl and KCl, which are produced by the strong reactions of all alkali metals with halogens.
