In the 16 former slave states in 1900, according to the federal commissioner on education, how did funding for black children's education compare with funding for white children's education?

Respuesta :

In the 16 former slave states in 1900, according to the federal commissioner on education, the funding of black children's education was half that for white children's education.

The freedmen provided a reasonable amount of support for the schools, though the northern aid did reach Georgia. Freedmen paid for things like the tuition fees every month and raised funds for teachers’ rooms and board, and schoolhouses while donating materials and labor to build them. They also created and supported schools that were independent of northern efforts.

White Georgians sought to limit public funding for Black education. Districts in the locals refused to support public secondary education for African American students.  lower salaries were paid to teachers in black schools than those in white schools, regardless of the teachers’ race. The construction and maintenance of Black schools were neglected. The state did not provide public higher education.
