Synovial fluid is present in the synovial cavity/joint. An inner layer called the synovial membrane and an outer layer called the fibrous membrane make up the joint capsule, which structurally holds the bones together.

A type of synovial joint that allows for axial rotation is a pivot joint, commonly referred to as a rotary joint. The concave surface of a second bone and an adjacent ligament form a ring around the rotating bone. The zygomatic bone is shown in blue, the maxilla bone is highlighted in red, the nasal bone is highlighted in yellow, the lacrimal bone is highlighted in purple, the mandible is highlighted in green, and the skull is highlighted in grey.
