On June 8, 1675, three Wampanoag men were hung after being found guilty of killing Sassamon by a panel composed of colonists and Indians. The Wampanoag as well as the colonists fought over their execution, which infuriated Philip, whom English had suspected of organizing Sassamon's murder. The Wampanoag attacked the Massachusetts Swansea colony in a series of attacks from June 20 to June 23, 1675, murdering numerous colonists and plundering and damaging property. In retaliation, English authorities sent their forces to obliterate Philip's hometown of Mount Hope, Rhode Island.
