Young loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) migrate across the North Atlantic Ocean from eastern Florida before making their way back to the North American coast. Here, we report that hatchling loggerhead turtles responded to magnetic fields by swimming in directions that would, in each case, help keep the turtles within the North Atlantic gyre currents and facilitate movement along the migratory pathway. These magnetic fields simulated those found in three widely separated oceanic regions. These findings suggest that juvenile loggerhead turtles have a navigational system whereby local magnetic fields serve as navigational markers and trigger changes in swimming direction at significant geographic borders.
