Kenneth Clark was the very first African-American to be named to the New York State Board of Regents, the first African-American to hold the position of president of the American Psychological Association, and the initial African-American tenured full professor at City College of New York (Martin, 1994).
They looked at how young children's self-concept and self-esteem are impacted by their race. The Clarks published their ground-breaking study between 1939 and 1950 in the Journal of Social Psychology and other academic journals.
