An average year has 1000 tornado reports, which result in 80 fatalities and 3960 drownings in the United States.
A tornado is an incredibly fast-rotating column of air that makes contact with the Earth's surface, a cumulonimbus cloud, or, very rarely, the base of a cumulus cloud. In warm, humid, unstable air near and ahead of cold fronts, intense thunderstorms give rise to tornadoes. Such thunderstorms have the potential to produce devastating winds and huge hail. Major outbreaks can happen when springtime storm systems produce broad, persistent zones that encourage tornado development. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(NOAA), more than 2,000 tornadoes are reported worldwide each year. Violent tornadoes can persist for more than an hour and have winds between 200 and 300 mph, whereas strong tornadoes can last for twenty minutes or longer.
