The property of equality applied in each step in solving the equation is explained below.

How to Apply the Property of Equality?

The general rule for applying most of the property of equality, is that, whatever we add, multiply, divide, or subtract on one side of an equation should also be done on the other side of the equation for the equation to be balanced.

The property of equality that can be used to solve the equation, 5(x - 3) = 20, is given below in each of the following steps:

5(x - 3) = 20 -----> given

1/5(x - 3) = 1/5(20) -----> Apply the multiplication property of equality

1(x - 3) = 4 -----> multiplicative inverse property

1(x - 3) = 4 ---> apply the distributive property to remove the parentheses

x - 3 = 4 ----> multiplicative inverse property

x - 3 = 4 ----> Apply the addition property of equality by adding 3 to both sides of the equation

x - 3 + 3 = 4 + 3

x + 0 = 7 ---> additive inverse property

x = 7 ----> additive identity property
