From the Empire of Japan's surrender in 1945 at the conclusion of the war until 1952, Japan was occupied and governed by the victorious Allies. A total of over 1 million Allied soldiers participated in the occupation, which was led by the United States with assistance from the British Commonwealth and was overseen by the Far Eastern Commission. American General Douglas MacArthur, who was named Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers by US President Harry Truman, oversaw the occupation. In 1951, General Matthew Ridgway succeeded MacArthur as supreme commander. This is the only occasion in Japan's history that a foreign power has conquered the country.
