The three original reasons for the settlement f Georgia were:
- Charity (Philantropy).
- Defense, and
- Economy.
What prompted the Georgia settlement?
The Georgia settlement was born out of the need to protect South Carolina and other southern colonies from Spanish invasion through Florida.
The colony of Georgia was officially founded on February 12, 1733. Research through history concludes that Georgia was not a debtor’s colony and not a single debtor was released from prison to settle the 13th colony.
James Oglethorpe was one of the 21 trustees responsible for governing the colony.
Georgia was founded for three primary reasons, they were for charity, economics and for defence and out of the three, the only success the colony had was the defence of South Carolina against the Spanish invasion.
Charity: James Oglethorpe was hopeful to create a colony for debtors and the 'worthy poor' out of his concern for the treatment of prison conditions for indebted people.
However, his dream never became a reality as no debtor was ever released from prison to live in the colony.
Economics: The guiding factor for the establishment of the colony was mercantilism as the trustees hoped that the colony would produce agricultural products like Rice, indigo, wine and silk which were desired in England.
They tried but failed in economics as none of these products reached the level of success they so desired.
Defense: This was their most important reason for founding Georgia, primarily against the Spanish in Florida. Their role was to serve as a military 'buffer' between the two countries.
Though there was one failed attempt when the war was declared, there was a defeat of the Spanish and the Georgia colonies with their Indian allies succeeded during the battle.
After the victory, the Spanish never overtly threatened the colony again.
