What biological environmental difficulties did Columbus encounter in the New World?

When Christopher Columbus arrived in the New World he unknowingly discovered a continent that had not been explored before by Europeans. There he found several problems that affected his crew due to conditions that they were not used to, such as:

  • Tropical climate and humidity: The characteristic tropical climate of the Caribbean Sea region where Columbus arrived is very hot throughout the day, which is why the Columbus crew suffered from dehydration and heat stroke. Additionally, the tropical climate is very humid, so breathing was made difficult by the large amount of water particles in the environment.

  • Thick vegetation: The thick vegetation was another challenging aspect for the Columbus crew. Once they reached land, they wanted to explore some areas and found it very difficult to penetrate the forests due to the volume of plants that were in them. Additionally, the insects that were in this vegetation bit the crew causing pain, itching and inflammation, which made the exploration task difficult.
