Cell transport lab question

If you were to continue this experiment by removing the SHELL-LESS egg from the water and placing it in corn syrup (a hypertonic solution), what do you think would happen? Explain your prediction. (If you choose to test your prediction, be sure to allow at least 24 hours before making your observations. And, of course, handle the egg very carefully!)

Respuesta :

Since the corn syrup is a hypertonic solution, the shell-less egg will shrink in size due to osmosis.

What is osmosis?

Osmosis is the movement of water molecules across a semi-permeable membrane from a region of low solute concentration to a region of high solute concentration.

A shell-less egg has a membrane which is semi-permeable.

When placed in either a hypertonic or hypotonic solution, water molecules will move out or move inside the cell of the egg.

A corn syrup is a hypertonic solution, when the shell-less egg is placed inside it, water molecules will move out from the egg cells into the corn syrup. Hence, the shell-less egg will shrink in size.

In conclusion, water molecules move out of a cell when placed in a hypertonic solution.
