What happens in "Condensed Milk"?

The protagonist of the short story "Condensed Milk" is a political prisoner at a Gulag, a Russian concentration camp. He is approached by Shestakov, another prisoner. Shestakov, however, is treated differently than the others, which reveals he has a closer relationship with the guards and the government.

Shestakov tells the protagonist that he has got a map and that he is gathering prisoners to escape the Gulag. The protagonist realizes this is a trap but, since he is starving, he makes a few decisions:

  • He asks Shestakov to give him a couple of cans of condensed milk to drink.
  • He decides to tell Shestakov he will not escape with them.
  • He decides not to tell the others about the trap.

Those decisions allow the protagonist to stay alive. They show he is a witty man who is desperate to survive.
