During facilitated diffusion, carrier proteins transport solutes across the membrane by binding to them and undergoing a conformational change.

Facilitated diffusion is a type of passive transport that occurs with the help of certain transmembrane proteins. There are two types of proteins that mediate this transport: gated channel protein, channel proteins and carrier protein.

Carrier proteins are the transmembrane proteins that undergo a conformational change to transport substances across the cell membrane.  Sodium potassium pump is one such example of carrier protein. These proteins can transport the molecules down or against their concentration gradient. The transport where both occur simultaneously is called symport.
