The word racism has so many diverse meanings, but how is it defined by each individual? Richard Henry Pratt once claimed that separating any class or race of people from the general population "kills the progress of the separated people or makes its growth exceedingly slow.", who was one of the few persons who completely understood the meaning . Sadly, Pratt's words are still having an impact on our lives. There are several instances throughout American history that contributed to the ethnocentric growth of the nation.
The establishment of off-reservation boarding schools for Native Americans, which was originally begun in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, by retired general Richard Henry Pratt, is one of the furthest manifestations of this ethnocentric worldview.
The schools were built with the intention of robbing Native Americans of their traditional practices and educating them in the skills needed to fit into American society. In order to support his arguments for assimilation of Indians into European society, Pratt linked this notion with the proverb "Kill the Indian, save the man." The question is, however, whether society truly compelled the American Indians to integrate because it wanted to aid them or because it wanted America to be made up of of actual Americans with American culture. In what way did the integration of the Indians result in cultural genocide? The Indian man's assimilation did not save him; rather, it just replaced him.
