Even before the Europeans came, the Mississippian culture was in a state of decline as a result of things like drought and over population.

When they then made contact with the Europeans, wars with them and the diseases the Europeans brought, decimated their populations and led to people moving away from the main Mississippian settlement points. This meant and end of the culture in that area.
