Encomienda system is founded in 1512.
- To assess the status of Native Americans, the Spanish created the Encomienda system, a labor and economic structure. The system served as a means of instilling indigenous with fear. The Encomienda system, which demanded tribute from native populations in the form of gold or labor during the Reconquista, was modeled after the practice of collecting tribute from Muslims and Jews. A conquistador would receive a set number of Indians from the royal crown. In exchange, the conquistador was supposed to defend and convert the native people to Christianity.
