The Church of San Millán de la Cogolla in La Rioja contains some of the greatest marble sculptures depicting religious themes, saints, and angels. These sculptures were created around the year 1033.
The "Victorious Vir.gin." La Conquistadora, the Conquering Vir.gin, was the most renowned sculpture in Spanish colonial New Mexico and is said to be the earliest representation of the Vir.gin Mary in the United States.
Painting was restricted to religious symbols throughout the early centuries of Spanish colonialism. Portraits of saints and the Holy Family became commonplace in churches.
Other themes include Christ's Passion, the Via Crucis, the Crucifixion, and depictions of heaven, purgatory, and hell.
