W. W. Jacobs creates tension and keeps keep us on the edge of our seats by using the setting. An example in the start of the story, it stated “the night was cold and wet”, (Jacobs, 1). This example tends to create a kind of suspense due to the fact that it brings up the mood of the story and gives the story a kind of moody and dark appearance.

He also used Suspense to keep us glued when the sergeant is said to be adamant to tell the Whites the things that were in  his hand.
