There are two possible solutions to this. One is "local union" in a more generic sense, and the other is "American Federation of Labor" in a more precise sense.

Shorter workdays and better conditions for workers came from local unions. After the Civil War, local unions such as American Federation of Labor (AFL) aimed to convey worker demands for shorter workdays, higher earnings, and improved working conditions as well as special support for the members in need.

Samuel Gompers founded the AFL in Ohio, which was a vast organization made up of unions and was exclusively accessible to skilled employees. Unions, though, didn't stop there. There was a second labor union that appeared. They went by the name of Knights of Labor. Terrence Powderly was in charge of this union, which welcomed both skilled and unskilled workers as well as immigrants, blacks, and women.

Shorter workdays was also one of the aims of Knight of Labor but they added more such as the abolition of child labor and equal pay for men and women. The objectives are the same, but considerably more inclusive!
