The Sacrifice of Isaac is the subject matter for the competition to design a minor basilica in Italy called Florence Baptistery or Battistero di San Giovanni's doors.
Lorenzo Ghiberti constructed and designed the north and east doors of the Florence Baptistery. Bronze sculptures in creative relief decorate the doors. Ghiberti had to go through a lengthy process and years of labor because he had to compete for the commission. Michelangelo gave the east door the name "Gates of Paradise."
The so-called Gates of Paradise are actually just copies of what you can see there right now. In 1990, Italy was forced to replace it with a replacement in order to preserve the panels' historic significance and protect them from harm.
In the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, the original bronze panels are being restored and kept in a dry setting.
