Populations are functioning groups of individual organisms of the same species in a defined location.

In the field of ecology, we define a population as a group of organisms that belong to the same species, living in a particular location, at a particular time. The members of a population can interbreed to produce fertile offspring.

The population of each species plays an important role in a habitat. For a population to survive in an ecosystem, it is best that it becomes adapted to that environment. Various ecological factors such as temperature, availability of food, number of predators, water availability, etc play an important role in determining which habitat would be suitable for a  population.
