The Ars Moriendi (The Art of Dying Well) was one of the first runaway successes of the fifteenth-century printing business.Jean gerson (1363 to 1429) initiated this literary form with a work written in French before 1403 that was translated into Latin as De arte moriendi (or variations on that title).

At a time when death is approaching  could be viewed as a performed battle against wickedness, the Ars moriendi codified a set of moral precepts that governed the expression of autonomy, relations between the dying and the living and orientation towards God.
