A patient with gout arthritis should avoid foods high in PURINES. These include most red meats, organ meats (liver, kidneys, sweetbreads), alcohol (especially beer).

Gout arthritis is a form of arthritis which causes severe pain , redness, and tenderness in joints often the big toe. It is caused by uric acid crystals that form in and around the joints. Gout occurs in people who have high levels of uric acid, also known as urate, in their blood.

Purines are natural substances found in some food. We should avoid high intake of purine containing foods. When your body digests purine, it produces a waste product called uric acid. A buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints can cause kidney stones and a type of arthritis known as gout.

Food to have in moderation

  1. Red meats(beef, lamb, mutton and pork)
  2. Organ meats( livers, hearts, brains, and intestines)
