In 1888 Monet began to paint ''Grainstacks'' from a field next to his home in Giverny.

He adored painting outside in the Giverny gardens that he helped design. He painted multiple series of the water lilies he saw in the pond over the course of the rest of his life. He also painted several pieces of the Japanese-style bridge that crossed the pond.

Around 25 to 30 paintings, collectively known as the Haystacks series by Claude Monet, were produced between 1890 and 1891. These series also include paintings of grainstacks.
