Federal courts of U.S. district courts jurisdiction have the power to hear a wide range of cases and can grant almost any type of remedy.

The trial courts of the U.S. federal judiciary are called district courts. Each federal judicial district, which each covers one U.S. state or, in certain cases, a portion of a state, has a single district court. There is at least one courthouse for each district court, and many districts have more than one. With the exception of some highly specialised matters, which are appealed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit or directly to the U.S. Supreme Court, district court judgments are appealed to the U.S. court of appeals for the circuit in which they are located.

District courts are courts of law, equity, and admiralty that have the authority to handle both civil and criminal cases. Federal district courts, however, are courts of appeals, not like American state courts.
