The concentration of solutes in most soil is lower than the concentration of solutes in root cells, so water enters the roots by osmosis.
In the plant's root hair cell, the concentration of the minerals ions are less as compare to the soils, so that the plant roots use active transport to absorb minerals such as nitrites, potassium from the soil. As, the result the concentration of ions in the roots increases.
Hence, the water moves from lower concentration to higher concentration of minerals, this phenomenon is know as osmosis. This intake of water in the roots increases water potential in the root xylem. And the water is transported through xylem, through different pathway like apoplast and symplast pathways.
