The Sites of Encounter in the Medieval World course introduces students to the links between nations and peoples in African-Eurasia (the "world") between 1000 and 1500 (the "medieval" period).
The lessons transport students to places where traders, travellers, and scholars exchange goods, technologies, and ideas, such as Sicily, Quanzhou, Cairo, Mali, Majorca, and Calicut. This is in accordance with recent global historical scholarship on cultural connections in and around the Mediterranean, Indian Ocean, and the South China Sea. These interactions also inspired new ideas and cultural creations, which spread from the point of contact.
