Northerners and Southerners disagree on the issue of permitting slavery in the west because

Slavery has existed in the United States since the 17th century. Southern and Northern states clashed on the role of slavery in society, leading to civil war and the creation of the Republican Party in the 1850s.

The North sought to halt the spread of slavery. They were also afraid that adding another slave state would give the South an advantage politically.

The South believed that new states should be allowed to allow slavery if they so desired. They were enraged because they did not want slavery to grow and the North to have an edge in the US Senate.

To resolve this issue, the Missouri Compromise was enacted in 1820.
