The law of England acted as the roots for the U.S law since the settlement of the British in North America. The British were the colonists at that time and assigned special rights and privileges to the Englishmen.
England was in force during the American Revolutionary War, and the Americans got influenced by their system of law. Thus, most of the laws of the U.S was derived from English laws.
With time, however, the Americans have made their changes and diversified their laws and rules from English law. The U.S greatly consists of state law, and thus the law differs from state to state.
