Within the spinal cord, the cell bodies of motor neurons are contained within the ventral horn.

Motor neurons are efferent neurons. So, as the name suggests, these neurons transfer signal from brain to the organs for performing activities. They control voluntary organs and involuntary movements by simple release of neurotransmitters or chemical messengers of brain. Acetylcholine and glutamate are neurotransmitters of motor neurons.

Motor neurons have multiple dendrites and are located in spinal cord, motor cortex and brainstem in Central Nervous System. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is the disease commonly associated with motor neurons presented in the form of muscle unresponsiveness and limp paralysis. Upper motor neuronal diseases include brain injury, stroke and Multiple Sclerosis (MS). While lower motor neural diseases include muscle weakness and paralysis.
