In accordance with established guidelines, LPNs and LVNs can administer painkillers and change dressings as part of their education and scope of practice. The scope of practice for LPNs and LVNs does not include assessment or education.
"Practical nurse" refers to a person who practices practical nursing and who has a practical nurse license granted in accordance with this chapter or a multistate compact privilege.
The following tasks classified as "practical nursing" are carried out under the guidance of a doctor or a licensed nurse:
(a) Making a contribution to the evaluation of people's and groups' health.
(b) Contributing to the creation and adjustment of the care strategy.
(c) Executing components of the care strategy within the nurse's area of expertise.
(d) Continually providing direct or indirect nursing care that is safe and effective.
Participating in the assessment of how interventions are being received (e).
(f) Assigning nursing tasks that fall under the practical nurse's purview.
