In Johnson's model for the disease of alcoholism, rationalization occurs at stage three of the process.
There are four stages of alcoholism- stage 1 when the person drinks and insists on drinking more, stage 2 where he drink secretly, stage 3 where he rationalizes drinking saying he or she does not witness any problem due to it and stage 4 where he has compulsive thinking and impaired thinking.
Vernon Johnson believed that an addict person, either to alcohol or drugs, is completely out of touch with reality and that if his method of intervention is used, such a person can be brought back to reality in a way that is receivable. Thus he developed the methods of intervention, which include proper planning, implementing and taking care of the person.
