Before the european arrive, the slave trade did already exist, but it was not a major activity. When they arrive , it became a major activity in west africa. In this period freed servants could not own properties. Whenever the indentured servants landed in the colonies, they would be rented out in the Colonies to provide labor. The need for this system was to get cheap labor.
African shifted from indenture servants to slavery because of the growth of the plantation economy and the tremendous needs of worker in Southern English America. Since before, there were no machines to use in plowing the field, cultivating and harvesting, or doing other planting works, Human labor was in demand. For every imported workers, their laborers brought, they gave 50 acres of land.
