It is the postpartum vaginal discharge. It contains uterine tissue, blood, mucus, and other uterine constituents. It's how your body gets rid of the additional blood and tissue that helped your baby grow in your uterus. It has a stale, musty fragrance reminiscent of menstrual period discharge and might remain for several weeks. It starts out heavy and gradually gets lighter till it vanishes. This could last for a few weeks.

The three stages of postpartum bleeding are lochia rubra, lochia serosa, and lochia alba.
