The RNA world hypothesis proposes that the first complex molecule was RNA and it preceded protein formation. Which major function of the ribosomal RNA supports the hypothesis?

Respuesta :

RNA can act as genetic material as well as a catalyst this function of the ribosomal RNA supports the hypothesis.

What is  RNA World hypothesis ?

The RNA World hypothesis proposes that RNA may have served as the genetic material for all of life's earliest generations.  According to this hypothesis:-

i. RNA was the first genetic material. RNA is the basis for many life activities, including metabolism, splicing, translation, etc.

ii. By changing its chemical structure, maybe as a result of mutation, DNA has evolved from RNA.

iii. RNA can function as a catalyst and as genetic material. Certain biological processes call for RNA catalysts rather than protein enzymes.

iv. RNA is capable of self-replication without the aid of any other molecules.

v. DNA is more stable than RNA. Due to the evolution of the repair process, DNA is double-stranded and able to withstand further mutation because there are complementary strands present.

vi. Because RNA is single-stranded, mutations can occasionally occur during replication. This shows that evolution with alterations may be possible.
