After the first Olmec head was found, it took about 70 years for the Olmec civilization to be  recognized.

The first Olmec head was found in  1862 by José María Melgar at Tres Zapotes.

   In the year 1938 archeologist Matthew Stirling rediscovered the same head and this led to the Sixteen other heads being subsequently found.

What was the Olmec Civilization

The Olmecs were regarded as  the earliest known major Mesoamerican civilization. They occupied the tropical lowlands of the modern-day Mexican states of Veracruz and Tabasco.
