An extrasolar planet is defined by NASA as “any planet beyond our solar system.” While many of these planets orbit stars such as the Earth does, rogue planets that are free floating do exist. The search for extrasolar planets, otherwise known as exoplanets, began in the 1990s when the first extrasolar planets were discovered. As of August 2, 2022, there have been 5,063 confirmed exoplanets. Many of these exist within our own galaxy, the Milky Way, which is home to more planets than stars.
