After decades of conflict between medieval kingdoms, modern Nepal was united in the late 18th century. That's when Prithvi Narayan Shah, ruler of the small principality of Gorkha, formed a unified nation out of a series of independent hill states.
After the death of Yaksha Malla, the valley was divided into his three kingdoms: Kathmandu (Kantipur), Bhaktapur (Badgaon) and Patan (Lalitpur). Around this time, what is now Nepal was divided into about 46 independent principalities. One of them was the Kingdom of Gorkha, with Shah rulers.
