Molasses played a crucial role in triangular trade. Slave traders from New England would transport rum to Africa as part of the triangular trade, and in exchange, they would buy Africans into slavery. Once at the West Indies, the slave cargo was sold to sugarcane farms there so that the sugar could be harvested and turned into molasses.
