Brazilian educator, Paulo Freire was imprisoned and exiled in 1964 for teaching literacy to people with little power.
For advocating communism, Freire was detained, and his teaching style was outlawed. Freire left for exile in Bolivia, Chile, and Switzerland after serving 70 days in prison. In 1979, he was granted political amnesty and went back to Brazil.
Following the coup d'état in 1964, Freire was put in prison for what the new government viewed as subversive aspects of his teaching. The united nation School of Political Sciences sponsored seminars on his work during his next appearance, which took place when he was living in exile in Chile.
