The destructive beliefs and attitudes held by a society that are ascribed to groups considered different in some manner, such as people with psychological illness, are called Stigma.
Stigma is often caused by a lack of understanding or fear. Incorrect or misleading depictions of mental illness in the media contribute to both of these factors. A review of research on stigma found that while the public accepts the medical or hereditary nature of mental health disorders and the need for treatment, many people still have negative attitudes toward people with mental illness. Stigma directly affects not only people with mental illness, but also the loved ones who support them, including family members. The stigma of mental illness is of particular concern in some diverse racial and ethnic groups and can be a significant barrier to accessing mental health services for people of these cultures.
