This early Northern Renaissance masterpiece of Christian art, which bears the name of the aristocratic Merode family of Belgium who owned it in the nineteenth century, is composed of three panel paintings and shows the Mary being informed by the archangel Gabriel that she has been chosen by God to be the mother of Jesus.
The piece is currently housed at the Cloisters Wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
