The low-relief sculpture is a sculpture in which formations project only just from the background.

Relief sculpture

A relief sculpture is a sculpture in which pictures are slightly raised off a flat background. A coin is an example of relief sculpture: the inscription, the date, or the figure--sometimes a portrait—are little raised above a flat surface. When the picture is only slightly raised, as with a coin, the sculpture is called low relief or bas-relief.

A low relief sculpture has smaller projection from the environment plane than high relief. A low relief can also be called a bas relief.

The ancient Egyptians occasionally carved figures into a flat surface. This kind of carving is learned as sunken relief.
