Texting drivers are up to six times more likely to be involved in a crash overall.

Researchers have found that drivers who text are six times more likely to be involved in accidents than drivers who do not text. Texting while driving is riskier than talking on a cell phone while driving, where the likelihood of accidents is four times.

The researchers used simulation tests to study drivers, and found that text messaging drivers had about 20 percent slower reactions to the brake lights of vehicles ahead, and were also prone to drift to other lanes.

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration had released data that showed almost 6000 deaths and over 500,000 injuries in 2008 due to distracted driving.
