Gudea was a Sumerian ruler in the state of Lagash southern Mesopotamia . His reign lasted 20 years characterized by immense infrastructural growth as well as peace throughout the region. Statues were erected in commemoration of the ruler, all with similar features in depicting the ruler.
Approximately twenty-seven statues of Gudea, have been found in southern Mesopotamia. seems that the early statues are small and made of more local stones (limestone, steatite and red stone),
when wide-ranging trade-connections had been established, the more costly exotic diorite was used. Unlike the local stone, diorite is extremely hard, and so difficult to carve.
