If the hormone progesterone were reduced or withdrawn the uterus would contract more and peristalsis would increase.

Progesterone levels are generally high during pregnancy. The changes in progesterone cause a laxity or loosening of ligaments and joints throughout the body. In addition, high levels of progesterone cause internal structures to increase in size, such as the ureters. In normal pregnancies, at about seven weeks the placenta will make all the progesterone needed for a woman to stay pregnant. Progesterone plays an important role in the development of the fetus it also helps in growth of maternal breast tissue ,facilitate lactation, and strengthens the pelvic wall muscles in preparation for labor.
