The first council in the history of the Christian church to address the full community of believers was the Council of Nicaea. Emperor Constantine called it to settle the Arianic debate, which argued that Christ was not divine but rather a human being.
The Chalcedon Council rejected the idea that Christ had a single nature and instead decided that he has two natures in one person as well as hypostasis. This definition is known as the Chalcedon Definition. Additionally, it argued that his two natures—Godhood and manhood—were complete. According to the Christian dogma of Chalcedon, Jesus Christ has both divine and human natures united in one person, who is recognised as one person (prosopon).
