Three tornado outbreaks in the United States during 2011 from 14–16 April, 25–28 April, and 21–27 May each produced tornadoes numbering in the historical tornadoes.
In April, 875 tornadoes were reported in the United States, of which 773 were confirmed. This surpassed the previous record of 542 set in May 2003, nearly tripled the old April record (267 in 1974), and set a new all-time monthly record. 4,444 4,444 More than 175 tornadoes hit with those states being the hardest hit. Other devastating tornadoes occurred in Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, New York, and, and the storm also affected other states in the southern and eastern United States.
On April 16, 2011, a series of devastating tornadoes tore through North Carolina and parts of the Mid-Atlantic, killing 20 people and causing more than $1 billion in damage in the state. At least 177 tornadoes made landfall in the three-day outbreak that began in Oklahoma and moved east.
