German artist Käthe Kollwitz (1867–1945) witnessed a lot of pain during her lifetime. Kollwitz used expressive art, including the use of charcoal, for her self portrait and to represent her experiences. She achieved this by portraying a self-critical, unattractive, and emotive physiognomy.
Käthe's early works show her attempts to reveals herself, but as she matured and gained more life experience, she became more intent on capturing the core of her personality and utilising her research into her physical appearance to examine human nature. Käthe Kollwitz has always utilised this form of painting to reflect on herself.
